ogle, xine, slow on red hat 7.3

i was wondering if anybody has experienced this problem - i was using mandrake 8.2 and switched to redhat 7.3. i watched dvds on xine in mandrake and they ran at good speeds. now in 7.3 im losing frames and my system is noticably slower when running dvds.

yes this is on the EXACT same box and i did not tweak bios. i got the latest dvdread and dvdcss libs, recompiled my video drivers, and tried both xine and ogle... any ideas?

firstly, use http://mplayerhq.hu of course...

also what usage is the system getting? is "top" showing that xine or whatever is maxing out the cpu or something?

try using hdparm -d 1 /dev/dvd to enable DMA for the dvd and increase it's speed. I had a similar problem when the dvd movie paused every second or so and this solved it.
Hope that helps

I upgraded from RedHat 7.2 to 7.3 and have noticed the same thing. In 7.2 the autorun process was the problem for choppy playback (checked every 2 seconds). Now it starts playing OK then after about 10 seconds it starts getting choppy.

ogle_a52 keeps popping up with resets (if this helps).

I have tried all the latest updates of Xine Ogle and MPlayer.

Yup,

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit turns off DMA. Add the above mentioned hdparm (hdparm -d 1 /dev/dvd or /dev/cdrom if you didn't link) to the script and the chopping problem should be fixed. I also turn off autorun:

ps -ef | grep auto

will get you the PID to kill, during play back under KDE.
