Is there any possibility to convert a file from theora/ogg to something else like xvid or so on?
I spent 3 hours in searching an answer on the net but it seems nowaday you can convert a file to theora/ogg, you can play it, but I didn't find how to convert from theora/ogg to another standard.
I thought to create some how-to for my tux-friends.
I thought a video how-to is the simplest way to explain, surely better than a text.
I use recordmydesktop to record some sessions but it only saves files in theora/ogg. My idea is to convert files to a common standard to ensure friends the possibility to see videos wherever they want: tv with a table dvd-player, pc, portable dvd player, mobile phones and so on.
Surely it's not necessary to be able to see videos on mobile phones ;-) but the I'm asking why theora/ogg is a one-way codec encoding: why I can't export *.ogg to something else?
I always preferred open standards, but in this case my problem depends on it, d'oh :-(
I did a how to using screen shots and FLPhoto. http://www.here2serve.biz/mandriva_install/
If you choose slide show you just get a sequence of screen shots. If you select the first thumb it will open up with text at the bottom.
In the recent past I've written some textual how-tos, anyway friends are unhappy 'cause they wanted some "images", so I added screenshots to original how-tos. Using screenshots, in exhaustive way, takes me too much time and it bind friends to the pc monitor, 'cause no one has ink enough to print files :-(
Nowaday I think the best way to explain is audio-video how-tos in which friends can hear the "theory" and watch the practice; last but not least, it saves the spare time, I spent in the past, in explaining and/or "screenshooting" ;-)
I tried some session recorders, but they save in gif and it doesn't allow us to watch the how-to without a pc. If you use vnc you'll get a swf file that makes no difference: you need to see files on your pc.
You, here2serve, advise me to use slideshows, I evaluate your idea but the way you use it always need a pc so the main problem: using files without a pc, still remains.
I prefer to use ogg/theora files not only 'cause a pc is necessary anyway and I've recorded some how-tos, but also because of the difference in video quality among these solutions.
I appreciate your post, here2serve, but I don't think it's the right solution in this case.
I've read a lot of documents about theora,
most of them are How-To.
Most of people convert multimedia files to
theora, but the majority of them think
it is not possible to reverse the process
converting a theora file to another multimedia
format.
In the recent past, I recorded some sessions
with recordmydesktop, but it records in theora
format (ogg) so I didn't find a solution.
Now here is the solution, useful for converting
all theora file to a format readable from other
media player such as DVD player and so on.
--> Solution <--
Now we can convert a theora file to another format,
such as Avi or whatever you like, choose your favourite
format reading the mencoder man pages
I'm not a seasoned Unix geek, so I don't know if there's a better
way, but I write this solution here because I hope this could be
useful, anyway if there's a better way, please post it here so
everybody can read and apply it ;-)
