Office Suite for Slackware

I'm enjoying using Slackware on my laptop, but have an issue with KWord. I need to be able to save in MS Office format so that I can share docs with others. KWord won't do that. Is there:
1. an update for KWord that will allow that? or
2. an office suite that I can install on Slackware so that I can save in MS Office?
I downloaded KOffice, but can't seem to install it properly. Probably a newbie problem, but I don't know.

Not sure about KWord, as I don't use it. If you want a whole office suite, Open Office is good (and compatible with MS Office formats). Slack also comes with AbiWord, which is simply a word processor (and I think it can save in MS Word format).

Using KWord you can save in the .rtf (rich text format) which will open in MS Word. As for free office suite OpenOffice.org is the best. It will save in all the native MS Office formats and can even export to .pdf allowing the documents to open pretty much anywhere.
