Nvidia Shutdown Issue
Im a linux Newbie, i have been installing some distributions like Mandrake 10 and RedHat 9 in my DEll Inspiron 2650. When I installed RedHat 9 i didnt though of installing the Nvidia Drivers cause i didnt need them but when i got the Mandrake i wanted to try some of the games. Besides the fact that it was a hasle for me as a newbi in linux and not knowing many of the commands. Then i had a linux fan to installed them for me, the main issue that came up is that thought the driver works in X, when i try to Shut Down the Computer or Reboot , it will only shut down X and not the computer. I though that by installing another distro i would get rid of the problem, but i have been trying with Ubuntu, and its imposible to shut down the computer completly with the Nvidia driver installed. Every time i have to shut down the computer manually. When i uninstalled everything works fines but i would like to use the video card that i paid for.
Please Help!!!!

ok. lets see
I think its ACPI, im a newbi, i have learn few things yet, what happens when i try to shutdown the computer or reboot it is that X (i think is called that way) shuts down and the screen goes black, but doesnt turns off or reboots, simply stays on, though i cant see anything on the screen. And it happened on Mandrake and it hapenned now on Ubuntu. So if anyone has the same problem and fixed would be great cause its probably one of the few things that has stopped me from migratin completly from WinXp to Linux

Here are few things you can do to try to know the origin of the problem:
type Ctrl+Alt+F1
You'll have a login prompt: log as root
Kill your X server (pkill X)
then try to halt your computer... If it halts correctly, it means that your problem comes from Xserver
so if that's the case, look at the script (in init.d) which halt your Xserver and try to find a solution
