Nvidia: ghost images of previous apps appear when loading new ones

This past week I more or less completed my move from Gentoo to Xubuntu 8.10. Most things are running fairly well, but there's one thing that bugs me: when I open a new application, its window gets created and seems to get filled with whatever is left in the memory of the graphics card. For example, after using Thunderbird I might close that application, then start up Firefox. The window for Firefox will be drawn but before it gets filled with the correct content it will show the content of the previously closed Thunderbird window for a second or two. I find this mildly annoying.

This is behaviour I did not have in Gentoo, though the hardware and driver are the same. I'm using the Nvidia driver version 173.14.12 on a GeForce FX 5200 with 64 MB of memory. I'm using Xfce with compositing enabled but no Compiz. That's also the same as it was in Gentoo.

Does anyone know whether there is anything I can do about this?

Robin
