Question NVIDIA drivers on kernel version 5.5.0-kali2-amd64 of Kali Linux?

I just can't get it to work. The drivers install fine but don't load, and my system does detect the card well (NVIDIA Geforce 940MX). I've tried everything: reinstalling, reinstalling after a complete wipe of the driver, reinstalling without gui, blacklisting nouveau and patching xorg. Nothing. I did get it to work once (I don't even remember how), but Kali just wouldn't boot, it was stuck with a black screen and the same boot lines every time.

If you know what might be causing this, please lend me a hand here.

I'd strongly suggest you read the two Kali links in my posting signature. Kali **IS NOT** meant for daily use, and their own website tells you this. It's meant to be run in a virtual machine, and even then for pentesting/security purposes. Even then, it's not for beginners, but advanced, experienced users.

Since you're using Kali, you must have the experience needed...I'd suggest entering "nvidia drivers kali" into Google, and reading the first link.

Have you tried the same with Ubuntu or Debian?

Yes, I actually have the knowledge, since I use Kali Linux for cybersecurity research and testing. I do use it as daily driver, but that's because I can handle the vast majority of errors that might occur. BUT, installing the drivers is something I did a long time ago and they were working fine! The problem is, when my kernel version got updated those drivers don't load anymore. And yes, I've visited a LOT of pages to read how to do it, but all of them are old, they aren't on the same kernel version I'm right now. So that's why I come here, because those methods worked before and I can confirm that, but now my kernel updated and they just won't load.

I thought it was a problem of the GRUB boot lines, but forcing NVIDIA to load in GRUB is useless as well. I don't really want to revert to an older kernel just for it to work, you know?

And no, I haven't tried on Debian or Ubuntu because I'm using Kali right now. I don't intend on using anything else XD.

I want to note also that even if I'm new to the forum, I'm not new to GNU/Linux. I'm an experienced user.

If you are an experienced Linux user, you'd then know that compiling the nVidia drivers has to be done for each new kernel, when you don't load them from the repos. And you'd know that GRUB doesn't enter into anything except dropping you to runlevel 3, so you can install the nVidia package.

Again, doesn't sound like you have a lot of experience, since Kali's own website says to use it as a VM, and NOT install it. And hard to see why ANYONE would need graphics on a machine that's supposed to be for pentesting and security forensics.

Again, if you were, you'd have seen the search-term in the VERY FIRST REPLY, which (if entered into Google) pulls up Kali's **OWN WEB SITE** as the very first hit...with an article from January of 2020...about installing nVidia drivers on the latest Kali.

You said you visited a lot of pages, and all of them were old; hard to know why you didn't check Kali's own website/forums first, since you've been using it as a 'professional' for so long. Good luck.

First of all, yes; a graphics card on this type of system is useful since you can use it with hashcat, a tool to brute force using a gpu, which is certainly faster than normal bruteforcing. Second of all, I also checked Kali's website (in fact it was the first one I tried) and worked in the past with an old kernel version, now it doesn't. I'll check it again in case it has been updated, but I don't really think so.

And yes, Kali can be used as daily-driver perfectly, you just need to learn how, that's all. It works for me and it will still work in the future I suppose. When it stops working for me, I'll just switch to another distro. But not for now.

...except for the fact the latest article (which you were given) is from 3 months ago?? Doesn't seem that old to me.

Yes, and I *CAN* drive a dump-truck as my daily driver...but a car is much better. There is a huge difference in what you CAN do versus what you SHOULD do.

OK.
Kali is based on Debian Testing.
Search the web on how to make this thing work on Debian Testing - the solution should apply to Kali too.

Not fully agreeing with TB0ne, but I have to say you have posted precious little technical & troubleshooting information so far.

Sure thing, I'll search for a solution on Debian Testing, see if I have luck. Also, if you need whatever troubleshooting info just tell me to post what you need.

Keep in mind too that Kali is a rolling distro so you will be rebuilding kernel modules very frequently. I update my work kali VM weekly and have hundreds of updates a week, necessitating me to reinstall the VirtualBox guest additions time and time again...

Perhaps not a deal breaker, just something you will have to deal with.
