nVidia driver problem

I have some trouble with the drivers for my GeForce TI 4200 card. When I use the "nv" driver I can get into X but openGL doesn't work. When I use the "nvidia" driver I can't get into X at all; I get a message that says something about "Cannot open device /dev/nvidia0" and "The nvidia kernel module does not appear to be receiving interrupts". I've installed the nVidia drivers from nvidia.com, through the synaptic, and with the "Envy" script and this is always what happens. Also, I am using Ubuntu 6.10.

Here is what glxgears says:

Code:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
And what glxinfo says:

Code:
name of display: :0.0
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual

Does lsmod show the nvidia module loaded? If not, what does "modprobe nvidia" (as root) do?

OK you said synaptic so i am assuming debian
you install
nvidia-glx
and
nvidia-kernel-common
and
nvidia-kernel-x.x.xx-whatever-kernel-you-are-running
or if you build you own kernel you use
nvidia-kernel-source
untar it
and
make-kpkg kernel_image modules_image
to get the kernel module for nvidia as a seperate package

ok and this is where yu might be messing up.
(this may not be necessary any more)
you load the nvidia module at boot
by putting the word
nvidia
in the file /etc/modules
this will create the device nodes in /dev
