NVIDIA Driver doesn't start automaticly with kdm but starts with startx

Hi !
I installed the nvidia drivers in runtime 3 on a Mandriva 2007 Spring.
When I boot on Mandriva, kdm starts automaticly and NVIDIA driver is not used.
I have to kill the service dm (service dm stop or /etc/init.d/dm stop),
then I have to login and, when I launch X using the command startx, NVIDIA's driver is used.

My xorg.conf is OK (I use "nvidia", not "nv").
When dm is running and I use the command lsmod, there is a module "nvidia" running.*
I didn't use the Mandriva's package, but the driver from NVIDIA's website.

So, why kdm doesn't want me to use NVIDIA's driver ?
I don't see why kdm's config isn't like startx config

Sorry if I am not clear ...

Thanks a lot for helping me

Why do you think that, particularly in light of this comment further in your post:

That would seem to confirm that the nvidia module is loading and running when the dm is running. Exactly, what do you see when kdm comes up, if in fact it does come up, that leads you to the conclusion that the nvidia driver is not running?

When I use startx, I can see the logo NVIDIA and glx works.
When I use the dm, I don't have the logo NVIDIA and glx doesn't work.
I use glxgears to try glx.

(glx is in my xorg.conf as loaded module).

When I want to configure my graphic card using nvidia-settings when dm is running, it is said that it is impossible.
It works when I kill dm and start X with startx.

Did I answer to your question ?
Thank you for helping me

The kernel module is loaded, lsmod confirms it.

But the module in question is another one,
"/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidiaXXxx/nvidia_drv.so"

I have no idea why "the loading system" would look in
different places, using 'startx' or 'kdm' , but try this:

# ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidiaXXxx/nvidia_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/
or # ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/
whereever the driver is on your system. It will be searched in
one of those 3 locations, I think.

(Used the above "trick" 3 days ago in another system x86_64,
making Deb 4 work with the nvidia71xx/nvidia_drv.so)

Regards

When you run startx from the command line, are you doing so as root? If so, you may be running into permission problems. As an oridnary user, the nvidia driver loads but won't run opengl programs and no 3d acceleration because certain device files associated with that driver have root only access. This was a common problem when installing the nvidia driver in slackware. See this thread:

to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

I don't think my last post was very clear. From the command line, log in as root and run startx and test with glxgears. Then try logging in as an ordinary user from the command line, run startx and test with glxgears. If glxgears works when X is tarted as root but not when X is started as an ordinary user, you have a permission problem.
