NTFS partition will not load under windows after editing with Knoppix : (

This is likely largely my fault.

A friends computer crapped out, and he had two hard drives, one with his OS (windows XP) and one larger one with his music and media on it.

It looked like an over infestation of spyware, so i figured that a reformat and reinstall of windows would work best. He had some files on that hard drive though, so i booted up knoppix to transfer over the files to the hard drive that wasn't going to be formated.

I right clicked the icon on the desktop, turned on the write support, and then copied the files i needed off of the first hard drive onto the second.

After I installed the fresh windows install, it won't recognize the second hard drive that I wrote to. All the programs that I have found say it is blank with no file system. Even when I boot into knoppix it says the hard drive is blank.

I have a feeling that i missed a vital step or messed something up in the partition tables for the disk, anyone have any idea's on how to recover the data? I'm willing to try anything at this point... I really don't want to tell my friend that I deleted all his music. :/

I'm not sure what kind of logs or errors i can give you to help, but I'll give anything you ask for to help troubleshooting..

Write-support on NTFS partitions is highly experimental in Linux. As far as I know only writing to already-existing files without changing their size works quite well.
What does fdisk -l say for the HD which is supposed to contain the multimedia files? Does it see the windows-partition?

The description Perlseattle gave is for the kernel ntfs driver. If you use fuse & ntfs-3g you may have better luck. Which filesystem did you mount the partition with?

thanks for the responses.

The knoppix CD automatically mounted the hard drive, but i had to right click to enable write support. I made the assumption that it was using ntfs-3g, I'll have to check and see what it used.

I'm currently using a third-party software to scan the disk to recover the files. its detected a lot of files so i'm guessing its only the partition table that got mucked up.

When I get a chance I'll boot into knoppix again and try the fdisk command. When I used cfdisk to look at it though, it was only reading an unpartitioned disk with no format on it.

On another note, i may have to pay for this recovery software.. anyone know of a good open source ntfs file recovery bootdisk / program?

Run testdisk from Knoppix.

And if testdisk don't help, run photorec which is part of testdisk for recovering files.

Testdisk worked perfectly! I used this guide: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestD...xample_problem

Thanks!
