NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE Samba Problem

I have been trying for the longest time to get my samba server correctly working on slackware 10.0. I am using 3.0.4 version of samba and I seem to have set all the shares up. I seem to be having a problem with the passwords or something. Whenever I try to connect to my box from console using the command # smbclient -L localhost
and I have added the users but when I enter the password into the prompt I get the response:
session setup failed : NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
is there anyone who can help me with this problem. Thanks
