`ns-2.35' : You don't have to build anything → $ sudo apt-get install ns2
Using: Unpack an ns-allinone-2.35 in /home/name/ to run the most default examples.
* The most examples should work with a 64bits OS.
* If you want to use all ns2 versions 2.26-2.34 + added protocols / do changes :
Use a 32bits OS : 99.x% simulations will work (better).
Installing gcc/g++ : $ sudo apt-get install g++ g++-4.4 g++-4.6 g++-4.7
* Building ns-2.35 : gcc-4.4 / g++-4.4 , or -4.6
* ns-2.33 : Probably gcc-4.4 / g++-4.4 for a stock ns-2.33 .
* ns-2.34 : Maybe gcc-4.4 / g++-4.4 .
... We will find out when Ubuntu 14.04 has been tested with ns-2.xx,
... over the next weeks.

Ubuntu 14.04 - 64bits.
* ns-allinone-2.34 and ns-allione-2.33 will build OK with :
$ export CC=gcc-4.4 CXX=g++-4.4 && ./install

# 4 : Ubuntu 14.04 - 32bits.
Test builds with ns-allinone-2.35 .
$ export CC=gcc-4.6 CXX=g++-4.6 && ./install : The file 'ns' is 8.5 MB.
Remake ns-2.35/ with g++-4.4 : The file 'ns' is 8.2 MB.
That's the only difference at compile time : Same warnings in the 'make' text.
The stripped file sizes are ( $ strip ns ) :
'ns' from g++-4.6 : 6.5 MB.
'ns' from g++-4.4 : 6.4 MB.
Conclusion : Use any of '-4.6' or '-4.4'.
