Not detecting modem?

I just bought RedHat 9 today and its great! but it doesnt detect my internal modem... i dont know why.. but i know it doesn't. BUT I read im my RH9 for dummies that Linux doesn't detect internal modems and you have to go through trial and error with echo'ing the ports (ttyS0, ttyS1 ect.) to see which is the modem. Well... i cant seem to find it and its working fine in windows now.. and the book also said that the windows COM ports correspont to the ttyS* but it says my modem is on COM5 and theres only tty0-3 lol, please someone help if you can =)

IN a terminal window run the following:

[root@localhost root]# dmesg | grep tty

Anything like this result ?

ttyS1 at port 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
