not able to connect to internet in ubuntu 10.04 with wired LAN

Hi
I am the new user to LQ..
I am not able to download anything from internet. and iam using ubuntu10.04.
It is saying
W: Failed to fetch http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...untu9_i386.deb
Could not connect to 172.20.0.100:8080 (172.20.0.100). - connect (113: No route to host)
This happened when iam trying to install c++.
and I think there is some problem in connecting to the internet.
I set proxy server address and port number in System->preferences->Network proxy settings
I think I have set the proxy settings properly.and it is working fine in win xp.
Can any one please help me what else i should do.

Check if your default gateway is correctly configured. It seems that it cannot reach a host located in another network.

Hi -

I assume your Windows XP and Ubuntu Pcs are on the same LAN (heck - maybe they're even the same PC). Correct?

1. Start Windows XP
From a command prompt, type "ipconfig /all"
Write down:
a) IP address
b) subnet address
c) default gateway and
d) DNS server(s)

2. Still in Windows XP see if you can ping your default gateway
Try to ping your proxy server, too.

3. Now start Ubuntu
From a terminal window, type "/sbin/ifconfig"
Write down your IP address and subnet address
Make sure the address is compatible with the address you got in XP

4. Still in Ubuntu, type "netstat -rn"
Write down the gateway.
See if it's the same address as the one in XP (generally, it should be)

5. Try to ping your gateway
Try to ping your proxy server

If you're still stuck, post back the results here.

Hai Paulsm4,
In my windows xp the ipaddress is 192.168.1.110, subnetmask :255.255.255.1,Default gateway, DNS servers and DHCP servers are 192.168.1.1.
But in ubuntu 10.04 , IPaddress is 127.0.0.1 , Mask :255.0.0.0.
