Question Normal that firefox has this many child processes?

By coincidence i noticed that firefox had a lot of child processes running which seemed a little unnecessary. When i had firefox open i had two tabs with two website open each and one tab with nothing in it yet. Still firefox has the following processes running just because of that:
$ pstree -p | grep -i firefox
        | `-fluxbox(3350)-+-firefox(3426){java_+
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3443)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3444)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3446)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3475)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3476)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3496)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3570)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3770)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3774)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3788)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(3792)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(4082)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(4083)
        | | |-{firefox-bin}(4464)
        | | `-{firefox-bin}(4639)
..this seem a little too excessive for just having two tabs and a blank tab open in firefox, does anyone know if this is normal and/or why firefox behaves this way, it seems like it takes up a lot more resources than necessary.

Im running firefox 3.5 (iceweasel).

Do they all go away when you close firefox? I occasionally find some old instances of firefox stuck running in the background and kill them off with killall firefox as root/sudo.
