non SB sound card, cant get sound out of ROSEGARDEN

i have tried everything. i have qjackctl from source forge, and it looks like everything should work. i have an m audio mobile pre usb, and my keyboard is a keystation 49e. both show under lsusb, and i can get rosegarden to record sheet music even! the piano has NO AUDIO OUT on it, its just usb or 5 pin din! the mobile pre has hardware monitoring and a bunch of other goodies.

I think what you lack is a MIDI synthesizer. That's what takes MIDI commands (the instructions Rosegarden reads from your piano to record sheet music) and make them into sound.

Many SoundBlaster cards (but not all of them, for example the SoundBlaster AudioPCI ones which are rebadged Ensoniq cards) have a hardware MIDI synthesizer built-in, so this is not required for those cards.

But for those with non-SB cards or on-board audio, a software MIDI synth is required to get MIDI to play. I would suggest you try fluidsynth (works with .SF2 SoundFont files), along with a Qt GUI frontend called QSynth. Another option is Timidity++ (works with Gravis UltraSound MIDI patch files).

Hope this helps.
