Ok, I completely deleted all traces of Firefox from my system and did a clean install. I went through all the plugin folders, including the ones in .mozilla (which is not hidden in KDE), and cleaned out all the stuff with "flash" somewhere in the filename. I did a clean install of firefox and had to re-download extensions, reset all the settings and get flash again. And flash still doesn't have sound. So... I'm running out of options here.
can you get any sound in flash, for example from a mpeg video clip or wav sound?
I read:

Both Mozilla and Firefox only support OSS, so they must be used with OSS ALSA emulation (or perhaps the aoss wrapper). Similarly for most Mozilla and Firefox plugins.
and here is someone else with solutions. Maybe this should be the firest thing to try now... It corresponds most to your problem. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundProblemsHoary

Firefox:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1 (in the console, of course)
[Note the above bug is being examined, but the workaround will suffice.]
