no video signal after installation

I'm trying lunix for the first time and after installing madrake 8.0 and rebooting, (and after their little splash and compiling screen) the video signal goes blank and I loose the screen. Do I need drivers for my card installed? If so, how? Is there a way I can get into lunix using a genaric driver like what they use to install the program? Anyhelp would be good

here are the specs:
AMD 1gig T-Bird
30gig ata-100
20gig ata-66(primary slave lunix installed on)
ATI Radeon 64 VIVO
Acer 50x cd-rom
256 pc133 ram

Thanks
Chad

It sounds like it is starting X at boot time, and that it doesn't like either you video card, or your monitor doesn't like the refresh rate its being driven at. Never having used Mandrake I can't offer much help for setting up X (dunno what tool they use!) but see if either CTRL+ALT+1 (switch to virtual terminal 1) or CTRL+DEL+BACKSPACE (kill the X server) gives you a command prompt.

Madrake X config command anyone?

I tried the above and nothing happened. I can get to the command prompt by starting it with "failsafe" but I'm an utter newbie and have no idea what to do from there (i typed kill as a joke and got something....no idea what though =) )

OK... straight from http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc...XFDRAKE-EXPERT it looks like once you get to the command line try running "XFDrake" to reconfigure your X server.

Good luck!!

Jamie...

PS That kill command is used to terminate processes by the way. Incase you didn't know you can use the 'halt' or 'shutdown' command to stop your system before you power down (sorry if this is tell you stuff you already know!)

WIN2K AND REDHAT DUAL BOOT

hi

I have 2 hardisks - lets call them HDA and HDB. I have win2k already running on HDA and then i tried to install Redhat 7.0 on HDB. Redhat installed fine but when i tried to boot win2k from LILO it said "MISSING NTLDR" . SO, i rebooted win2k using the win2k prof. CD, chose REPAIR and used the "CONSOLE" repair oprion and then typed FIXMBR, which allowed me to boot my win2k but now LILO is missing!

So the problem im having is that i can load one OS or the other but not two together :( ideallly i DONT WANT LILO but I woudl like Windows 2000 boot menu to choose from.

can someone plz help me

thanks alot

Thanks Jamie, I found that too...but it doesn't seem to like either my monitor or my vid card. I'll keep playing around with it. Thanks for your help though!

Okay, if you ever fix the MBR or repair using a Windows utility, its gonna wipe out your configuration if you had LILO there and its gonna rewrite it using Windows boot info.
You might want to read the howto's at www.linuxdoc.org to make it so you can boot from the windows loader to start linux from there.

You might want to browse the forums here, there seems to be problems with the Radeon Card and also check www.xfree86.org for compatibility lists and see if you might need an upgrade or new driver.
