No Users logged in X

Hi,

when I log in using xorg into *any* of my WM's (kde3.3.0 and enlightenment) there are no users logged in.
who shows no one and neither does gkrellm2

when I log in to vc/1 -> vc/6 (ie from terminal - not X) I get logged in normally and who shows up a user

no users are logged in when I open a terminal in X either

anyone know what is causing it?

I suspect it is something to do with calling a bash shell to launch X but I am not sure

please help

it isn't a problem with who it is a problem with regestering a login when logging in with entrance

BTW: did you notice any irony about our usernames....
