no user dir no bash shell for new users ubuntu 12.04


hi all,

i installed 12.04 precise, everything fine, but when i tried to create user it is not creating home dir , even shell also shows like /bash/sh, in passwd file. even i create folder manuall i cant run ll command , i don't know how this is happending, i installed only ubuntu server. am i missing any packages, but the user i created during the installation has home dir and bash shell and .bash_profile etc .. but why the uses im creating now hav issue. please help me.

and also if i hit startx it is taking me to gnome as guest, i can see all my users but i can login in if click on user screen goes bland for a couple of seconds and again takes me back to guest.

Hi,

what method are you using to create the user? Eg useradd, adduser, a gui?

hi evo2,

im using, useradd. I manually created user and copied skel folder to it. why the hell its happening any pkg missing ?

What you describe seems to be the expected behaviour for useradd. Check the man page and you'll see that you'd be better to use adduser.
