No True Linux *DAEMON* for p2p networks
 

So far, all the P2P networking clients I have seen for Linux are ports of Windows programs (aMule etc).

What they have in common is that you have to start them as an application once you log into your Linux session with username and password.

Can anyone tell my why on earth there is no p2p-daemon for UN*X that boots with the OS just like the fingerd and others, and runs REGARDLESS of who's logged into the network? This is how we used to run the file swapping servers available back in the 1980's and 90's...

I really really really would like to see such a daemon capable of connecting to all the networks (such as shareaza) that constantly runs in the background, picking up little bits and pieces from all over the net.

Then the user can connect over the network from as fancy client as anyone would care to design.

The point here is getting back to UN*X roots - get a daemon to do the job - constantly, rather than a silly port of badly written Windoze software..

mldonkey runs as a daemon, and to interact with it u can use a web browser, or a gui frontend

mldonkey supports kazaa, gnutella, edonkey, soulseek and a few more

My understanding (which might be wrong) was that mldonkey requires daemontools and thus is not natively written to run as a daemon constantly?

I'll proceed over to mldonkey's forums right away to inquire further - thanks for the tip
