No streaming video in Ubuntu

At my university I must watch some video lectures. I am completely unsuccessful in watching them in Totem, VLC, or Mplayer. Although the videos are available only from within the university, the CS help page lists these sites that use the exact same technology:

How can I see these videos in Ubuntu? I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn with KDE. Note that Gutsy is incompatible with my hardware (ATI X1400 video card)

When clicking on the links above I get a message: "Validate your copy of Windows". Duh! I know, bad to use MS software on a Linux forum ... So the answer is this streams use the MS video format (probably with DRM, otherwise it usually works). So no way around a MS machine for this :-(

Maybe you should lobby a little bit in your university for using Ogg Theora or at least Real Media (really fat and ugly Windows player, Linux users are lucky however with the Helix-based solution).
