No sound when using flash
Hello, I am having a strange problem getting sound output when playing flash files. Tried many things but still no sound.
Here's a rough description of problem and debugging so far:
Firefox flash plugin installed but no sound from flash files.
Other sound player works ok.
Installed the macromedia flash standalone player: gflashplayer
Still no sound, but no error messages.
checked permissions of /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sound/dsp etc however this couldnt be problem as i can cat to /dev/dsp ok.
test write: cat bigfile >/dev/dsp works.
test read: cat /dev/dsp works.
so then tried: gflashplayer flashfile.swf
then looked at the /proc/PID/fd folder
can see /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer are being used.
then:
strace -Ff ./gflashpayer flashfile.swf 1>log.txt 2>&1
and looking at log.txt I see that /dev/dsp is opened successfully for RDWR
and appears to be writing to it.
But no sound... so I am stuck.
Does flash possibly hav its own internal volume control?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Richard

be sure flash is set to use your soundsystem (esd, oss, alsa, ...). should be configureable somewhere with mozilla and iirc has been a small problem here in debian once. it also was about thye plugin keeping the output device open when not it use.
google to catch documentation for your distr.
however -havn't installed flash here .. *untested*

Im just using oss and it seems to be using that correctly as i can see the flashplayer is accessing /dev/dsp ok.
But doesnt seem to have a configuration setting anyway.
Also cannot set from in Mozilla as it is not a mozilla problem... same thing happens when using the standalone, command line macromedia flash player.
Anything else you can suggest?
Cheers,
Richard

let's see..
[...]
Firefox flash plugin installed but no sound from flash files.
[...]
version? where downloaded? your distribution.
[...]
Other sound player works ok.
[...]
something like cat, play or xmms, i assume.
[...]
so then tried: gflashplayer flashfile.swf
then looked at the /proc/PID/fd folder
can see /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer are being used.
[...]
/dev/mixer unmuted, 100%?
do a procinfo -n (or cat /proc/interrupts) while dsp is in use and see if #irq's raise.

no. there may be some kind of compiletime option you can set. speaking with alsa is something other than speaking with oss or esd.
no i-take-care-of-sound daemon installed - just plain oss?
