no sound in ubuntu 12.04

Hello - All,
I'm having problems with ubuntu 12.04 NO SOUND!! That seems to be the problem on various forums I've visited. Clean/fresh install.
Tried all their suggestions, no fun yet...
Running win 7-64bit on virtual box..Every earlier linux version works fine--mint 11/12 and ubuntu 11.10.
When I open sound properties, I see for built in audio , only s/pdif and mic options available. That's not for regular computer speakers??
Even alsamixer is all open. lspci recognizes my intell sound card. Nothing is muted where I know to check?
TODAY
Now i've really messed up something? in sound properties, I have nothing but (( dummy output ))?
Suggestions welcomed!!
Thanks John in Dallas

I ran into a no sound issue after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04. In
my case, the problem was my Nvidia video card with an HDMI output.
All the sound was being directed to the HDMI output instead of the 3.5
mm jack on my on-board sound card.

To fix it, I went to Multimedia->Pulse Audio Volume Control
then click on the Configuration tab,
then set "High Definition Audio Controller" to "Off" and made sure
"Built-in Audio" was set to "Analog Stereo Output".

You might then want to check the "Output Devices" tab and make sure
the port is set right and it isn't muted and the volume is turned up.

Mine all looked fine in alsamixer and everywhere else before I did
this as well, but as soon as I disabled the other controller, sound
came on right away.

Hope this helps,

Preston

Steve,
\ This might help you with your sound problems...It didn't help me, though!!!! This was from a member of our LUG.

Well, I've proved a few things!! I'm sure there's nothing wrong with my intel sound card or its properties..
Sound works find when I boot from the live CD. NOT when I boot into virtualbox and test...VB does NOT pick up my internal speakers.
in sound properties: digital output built in s/pdif and headphones are listed, NOT my speakers???

What's the solution ? VB is current 4.14

Hope this will help others...seems like it's a problem ....this solved my issue..

Is your audio setting for your Ubuntu guest virtual machine set to ICH AC97?

ICH AC97 is the only VirtualBox VM audio setting which allows me to get sound when running Ubuntu as a guest and either Windows or OS X (10.6.8) as the host.

In particular, if a VM's audio setting is Intel HD Audio then sound does not work in an Ubuntu 12.04 guest.

On the other hand, sound will only work for a Windows 7 (64-bit) guest when the audio setting is Intel HD Audio. This can be rather annoying when you are working with a VM which dual boots either Ubuntu or Windows 7 as the guest OS.

I have never investigated this further to find out why it works this way or if there is a way to work around it. If you happen to find one, please let us know about it.

Note: You will have to "power off" your VM to change its audio setting.
