No sound in snes9x

Well, as the title says I have no sound. When I run it I get this error:

/dev/dsp: No such file or directory
Sound device open failed

I've had my system up and running for.. well I dunno.. a while. Sound works for everything else fine, I'm using alsa running slackware 12. Not sure where else I should be looking. I've been searching for the past hour or more trying to figure this out without finding even a hint.

edit: btw aoss does not work for me, not sure why I haven't looked into it, but that's not an option atm, and please don't tell me to use zsnes, I like snes9x much more.
