No sound in Opera 7.11 on Slack 9.1
 

I am trying to get sound to work in Opera. It won't work with flash, or just for normal application sounds. I have tried the following:

Running it as 'opera'
Running it as 'artsdsp opera'
Running it as root (as 'artsdsp opera')
Running it as 'soundwrapper opera' (I don't even have this program)
I DO have 'application sounds' enabled in prefs

I can get flash to play sounds in mozilla if I use 'artsdsp mozilla', but not if I run plain mozilla (this is all with my regular user account).

An odd thing is that in mozilla the sound works great, but the animation is super slow and choppy--no matter what the quality setting is (I am using a 1.3 Ghz Duron).
However, in opera the animation is super smooth, but the sounds are non-existant.

Anyone know what gives??

Is this Q still relevant? -- Slackware is up to 10.1 & Opera to 8.02.
