no sound in gnome?

ok, i have a fresh install of gentoo. basically all i did was after the install i did an emerge -u world, and then emerge gnome.
i'm having problem with sound. the sound is muted when i startx as root, or a normal user, which is in the audio group. if i click on the speaker icon i get a msg no volume control|gstreamer plugins and/or devices found.
in console i got my sound working. i have the nforce4 onboard sound. i've installed the driver into the kernel, and it didnt see it. i installed them as modules, and i ran alsaconf which ran fine, then ran alsamixer, and it worked also. then i ran speaker-test, and i get sound out of my speakers.
why wont gnome see my sound card?
thanks for your help

OK, I'm not a Gnome user, so I can't tell you for sure. You've chosen not to use Gnome sound daemon which is ESD. Nothing wrong with that, you need to configure your Gnome apps to use ALSA. This is the part I do not know how.
Tip: Set your ALSA_CARDS and VIDEO_CARDS variables in make.conf, then Gentoo will build only those drivers your system needs, not everything available.

seems like this is more of a gnome issue than anything else. i emerged some apps, like mplayer, and that works fine. but i tried the cd player from inside gnome, and that doesnt work.
