thank you first ingar. i have just tried everything you said except the compile source code. But it's still the same. no sound. The result of locate alsaconf is also the same. By the way, i told the wrong driver that i currently installed in my laptop. Device is Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-LICH4-M) AC'97 Audio controller. manufacturer is unknown. Driver is snd-intel8x0. It is not working however. It is suppose to be a conexant driver.
I am sure that the alsa is installed. because when i try to install those alsa package it will say i have already installed those package. But still no alsaconf exist. what else can i do? who can give me a complete step to make my own driver using source code? thanks in advance.

That's good news. Congratulations!

(It's strange that you couldn't find alsaconf though - did you run the command updatedb again AFTER you installed the rpm-packages? If not, the command locate alsaconf would not find alsaconf! )

(Also, after you installed the rpm packages of alsa the first time - if you then did run it again, then you certainly would have gotten the message that it's already installed.)

If there's other questions in the future, just post it here - and we will do our best to help.

Have a nice day!

i have run the updatedb after installing the rpm packages. but seem like no use. I found another minor problem. My xmms can't play mp3. And when i play mp3s using real player the respond of computer become slower. Does it related to NTFS mounted drive? Because those mp3 files are on the NTFS drive.

/usr/share/man/fr/man8/alsaconf.8.gz
but if i run these two file. it will say bad file or command.

i am just going to install the package first. I will post the result again after i have installed it.
[I'm puzzled by how this forum works -- where is the Reply button? All I could find was "Quote"]

I discovered that alsa-utils 1.0.9rf-2.FC4, which I got via "sudo yum install alsa-utils", doesn't include alsaconf, but alsa-utils 1.0.9rfa-16.rhfc4.at, the most recent version available from http://rpm.pbone.net, does include alsa-conf. Confusing, yes.
