No sound in any web browser, browsers very unstable.

I have seen many similar posts for no sound in flash, or browsers unstable, but none helped me.

None of my web browsers produce any sound, flash or non-flash. Tried opera, galeon, firefox, and mozilla. Sound in everything else works (mplayer, etc)

The browser is also very unstable and seems to crash a alot when I close tabs with a lot fo javascript and or flash.

[edit] - Hmm, just tried pandora, it gives me a looping 2 seconds sound that is annoying and loops until I kill the browser. most other sites just silence.
  • Tried updating alsa libs
  • Tried updating kernel
  • installed libflashsupport
  • ran firefox under esd
  • ran firefox under aoss
  • reinstalled every installed package (emerge -e world)
  • happens as root user as well, so not a permissions/group issue

I am using Gentoo linux, current and up to date, though the problem happened with a non-updated version from a month ago. The system is an hp pavilion.

Specs: Core2duo, 4gb ram, intel HDA sound card.

I am not interested in any posts blaming the distro for the problem. I have 2 other systems running gentoo that are also core2's the only significant difference is that the other ones have sound blaster live/audigy. They both work fine.

Hmm, seems to be a problem with the onboard audio (hda_intel) cause it works with a usb sound card. strange that all audio works on both except browsers fail on hda_intel
