No Sound Events w/Gnome on Mandrake 9.2

As the title says, I am having trouble getting sound to work on my Mandrake 9.2 system. I am using Gnome, and I have sound working to the extent that I can play music using xmms just fine, but I have no sound for desktop events that should have sound.

I've brought up the sound config tool and enabled sound server startup and sound for events, but still get nothing. I don't hear anything when testing the individual sounds either. (i.e. on the sound events tab, picking an event that already has a sound associated and clicking play)

There must be some config I'm missing somewhere, but where?

Check that your soundserver is using the correct output (alsa or osss, whichever you use).
Also, check that XMMS is outputting to the soundserver, not directly to alsa/oss - otherwise, if xmms has control then gnome can't play sounds.
