No Sound At All On Ubuntu 8.10

Hey guys, I'm posting this here because ubuntu forums doesn't respond worth crap. You guys are AWESOME because even if you dont think you know the answer, you at least try to respond with some advice.

Anyway, I have installed ubuntu 8,10 on my emachines T4010, and there's no sound whatsoever. Everything in volume control is on max, and I have my PS3 hooked up to the same monitor, so the monitor is not an issue, well, at least I don't think so.

Other than that, it's working awesome. It just sucks that I can't listen to music or enjoy a youtube video, which as time goes on, slowly starts to piss me off, hahaha. So what do you guys think I should do? Thanks.

Well, it's always useful to get help figuring stuff out.

It is unlikely to be related to external HW - I take it your speakers are in the monitor?

It would be nice to confirm the tablet's sound chipset - use lspci and paste over the line which talks about your soundcard.

Use dmesg to check your syslog for mention of sound issues.

Make sure that the correct soundcard is being accessed - right-click on the volume control applet and select "preferences" - you'll see a list of available sound cards.

Also from the rt-click menu, select "open volume control" - the card is written in the title bar.

go to edit > preferences to see if there are any other tracks you may need to display (not all the available sliders are shown by default).

Hahaha, what I meant was not one person off ubuntuforums has even replied to this same question in over a month, wouldn't that kinda piss you off, hahaha. Anyway, that's not my emachines. It's not a laptop, but a desktop.

Okay, I looked through it, but I cant find anything noticeable. What would I be looking for? Like "no soundcard recognized" or something along those lines?

Okay just did that. Says "INTEL ICH5"

Yeah, it says "INTEL ICH5" so it must at least be recognizing the sound card, right?

Yeah, I put all the sliders up before just to make sure, and still not a hint of sound.

OK - intel chipset - this should just work!
Quote:

Correct - but lets be sure: show me the output of

lsmod | grep snd

and

asoundconf list

But so far it all looks correct. I have not found reports of sound problems with this machine. In other words - you should have working sound. Which means there may be a problem external to the os after all.

It sounds stupid but double check those sliders to make sure there is no cross over the bottom of them. We'll both be kicking ourselves if we miss that! Also on the list of stupid things to eliminate is the volume control on the monitor (check the monitor's configuration menus too).

... check the bios (really hunt) for any special features which may interfere - this includes power management.

Try with external speakers.

... Ubuntu is supposed to be sweet with this system - do you get sound with the live distro?

I'm using an HDTV/monitor so I'm trying to use the speakers off the tv, if that's what you mean. Here's the link to what hdtv monitor I'm using if thats an issue. http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...=LS22TDNSUV/ZA

Okay, so it's something I'm overlooking, great. It's usually the simple stuff that gets you huh? hahaha. Well, I made sure that the volume on my tv is on max and looked at the tv's settings. Everything looks ok. In the bios it says sound enabled.

Here's a pic showing all the sliders up, but what do those those "links" at the bottom oif the slides mean? Anyway, I messed with those, but nothing changed. http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1238363382 And I also checked the tv/monitor's settings. Sound is all the way up.

Ok, so what should I be watching out for in power management?

Dude! Sound works with external speakers! Thank you Jesus for sending you man! Anyway, that's kinda good news, but is there still a way I can get it to work with the TV/monitor speakers? I'm borrowing these ones that I'm using right now. If not, I'll guess I'll set aside some money for some external speakers. Thanks man!

You thanked Jesus for sending you a Discordian? Thank Goddess for Atheism.

OK - so now you know that it is a fault with the tv speakers - either you did not have them hooked up right, or you did not configure them right, or they are broken. To troubleshoot this you need to consult a manual.

Aww, c'mon dude, don't be telling me you're an atheist. Well if you are, no worries, it's chill. Atheist or not, you helped me out so that makes you awesome!

Yeah, I don't think I have them hooked up right, so I'll see what I can do. Thanks for helping me out man! Oh yeah, how do I mark this as solved?

You're welcome.
Many peeps tell me they believe, but when you show them the work of the lord...just like Satan...they laugh in your face, meaning...they don't. It is typical for Satan and his followers to laugh at God.
