No mixer after 2.6.1 kernel upgrade

G'day from Aus!

I run a Tosiba Libretto 100CT with Debian Testing (Sarge). I recently upgraded to 2.6.1 kernel because I wanted some of the nifty features (like hotplug firmware loading for my wireless NIC). I have got everything working (ieee1894, Wireless, etc. etc.) including my sound card (opl3sa2), but can no longer access the mixer device.

I am using the old OSS drivers (as I was under 2.4 kernels) and everything is configured identially as it was under 2.4.x

When I run aumix (for example), I get the following: "aumix: SOUND_MIXER_READ_DEVMASK". If I try to cat the /dev/mixer device I get "cat: /dev/mixer: Invalid argument".

I have tried replacing OSS with Alsa but this is worse... (Can't get the sound card to work at all!)

Getting frustrated... please help!

same problem

I have the same problem (maybe it is being in Australia that is doing us in :-)

Am running a Toshiba Portege 3020CT also with Debian testing (Sarge). I selected the 2.6.8 kernel, which helped with device recognition (and the sound card worked without having to recompile the kernel). The sound card is also opl3sa2.

The sound card works, but the volume is low (I assume this is some default).

When I run aumix, I also get the "SOUND_MIXER_READ_DEVMASK" error. I don't really need the mixer, if there is some other way to set the volume to maximum.

I notice your post is quite old - were you able to resolve the problem?

Glenn

(followup to my previous post)

Discovered that I had several mixer devices (yeah, okay, I'm new to this); presumably /dev/mixer points to one of the others?
/dev/mixer /dev/mixer1 /dev/mixer2 /dev/mixer3

aumix works on mixer1 eg
aumix -d /dev/mixer1

So I set up /dev/mixer to link to /dev/mixer1 (don't know if that is the right way to do it, but it works for now).

Now I have volume on the Portege! Don't know if this will help on the Libretto.
