no jpeg support

Im almost finished with my fully-featured Gentoo desktop from stage 1, and everything is great except for one thing: I dont have jpeg support for some reason. I emerge media-libs/jpeg, and also gthumb, which is suppose to be able to view them. I know it seems trivial, but Id like to have it. Anybody have any ideas what packages need to be installed for jpeg support?
I guess the bad thing about a distro that comes with no packages is you have to know which ones you need.

if anyone cares, I figured out the reason. I had to add "jpeg" to my USE flags and recompile gtk+ and eog.
