NO-IP port forwarding problems Apache Server

Ok, here is a good one.

I have Ubuntu 6.10 distro. with apache2 running as a web server. I can view the web page by typing in http://localhost or by typing in the IP address of the server: 192.168.1.4. So, Apache works.
I am also running NO-IP on my system

I set up port forwarding on my netgear router to 192.168.1.4:80.
I also set port forwarding on my actiontech DSL modem to 192.168.1.4:80.

Every time I follow the url, pkartworks.servehttp.com, I get my modem log in screen. I thought the problem was that I was inside the network so I asked my friend to acces the URL from his computer on a different ISP.. The site was not found.

Whats going on? My no IP account updates to my newest IP address. What do I do about port forwarding with a modem and a router? Do I need to forward to the router then to the server? I have tried both.. What do I do?

Have you try to access using your IP? That is your static IP not the 192.168.1.4. There could be a problem there. Try it.

Se the thing I forgot to say is that my IP address is dynamic. I use No-IP to update it a connection that comes in on port 80 must be routed to the server which owns the IP: 192.168.1.4.
Is this correct?

That seems weird that you would have to forward a port on your modem? If you did have to forward a port on both there would have to be two different numbers.

This all depends on how your modem is connected to your router. My modem is bridged. It's like it's not there. If your modem is like a router, then your router might be assigned a different number.

Your server ip is 192.168.1.4.

Your router ip could be something different like 192.168.0.4.

On your modem you would forward 192.168.0.4.
On your router you would forward 192.168.1.4.

I hope this can get you going.

You can use a service called Zoneedit.com. It is free but you need your own domain name (only about $10 a year). You can use a program called ddclient. It is way better than the one no-ip gives you. It updates my ip every 3 min and also updates zoneedit through a secure connection.

After all this time I finally figured it out! I was setting up port forwarding for a torrent program...to download..uh..legal stuff... I had a realization:

I was forwarding to the wrong IP. See, My Modem's IP is 192.168.0.1 I was trying to forward port 80 to the IP address of the router. Which is 192.168.1.1 (when I access it through a browser). This wasn't working!

when I realized that the IP address of my netgear router would be an IP that in next in the sequence! The IP I should have been forwarding to is 192.168.0.2! This worked for the torrent program!

So when working with two routers like mine: my actiontech and netgear routers. you forward port 80 to 192.168.0.2 on the actiontech then from the netgerear forward the port to the server IP. In my case it is 192.168.0.4
