no auto zooming

I can't get anything to display fullscreen if its resolution is less that of my monitor.
I tried tuxracer, and I just get black all around the border.
I tried Counter-Strike in wineX, and the same thing happens.
It used to work in Mandrake 9.1, now in 9.2 is doesn't.

I used to be able to manually zoom control+shift+numpad(-+) (that is if thats the correct code...) and it doesn't work either.

Any help?
