I was never a heavy Napster user, but I did enjoy Audiogalaxy before it finally got muzzled. What are the best options available today for the average music lover? (Short of Limewire-esque programs, which I have never had any success in running... (And I've tried Gnutella and QTella: both failed to run after installing from source.)).
I miss being able to find obscure jazz tunes at the touch of a search engine...
I use gtkgnutella.Works ok for me.Mldonkey works with the edonkey network but I don't think there's a lot of music there.Direct connect is something else I've been playing around with - didn't get it to do anything so far.You can also check out freenet and gift.
I didn't know there was direct connect for Linux, or did you run it with wine? And do you mind posting more info about this edonkey, freenet and gift if you don't mind....
Acid is right - for direct connect you are definitely better off with google.Try direct connect and your distro for the search.Freenet and gift are not for me - with freenet you seem to be required to have a client up and running all the time.gift needs to be compiled from cvs - too lazy for that;I'll try if I ever get gentoo up and running.
As far as edonkey is concerned:there is a client called mldonkey that works with linux.Works pretty good, too. The problem with edonkey seems to be that there is a crack out for the d/l limitation. There are a lot of #$%@heads out there that only d/l and don't upload.
Plus you better make sure that your box is locked down pretty good - there's a lot of strange things out there.

Oh sorry chris (again) but i just wanted some feedback and stuff, i'm not stupid i know there is google, but google doesn't give me feedback man i think you sorta need to loosen up, i understand your a moderator and all and i know how it is being a moderator....(was one on a mirc help channel) but come on man loosen up...i don't know (and don't care) if no one else agrees with me, but just do us a favour and loosen up, i guess now i know why some people don't like coming here...
Personally Chris, i have nothing against you, i acutally quite admire your knowledge, and i know this thread isn't appropriate for this, but i have been wanting to say it....
BTW thanks crashmeister and i'll take your advice bout getting my box locked down
I recently came across the following website. They are still in a very prilimenary stage and still got some bugs to iron out. But it all looks very promising. The best thing about it is that it's all open source. And what I especially like is the way it's set up. You can keep the daemon running which will share/download files for you. And you only need to run a gui when you actually want to search things. This also makes it possible to run the daemon on a server computer and the gui on a client computer. Well I just personally like these kind of things and I was impressed by reading the site. I haven't totally tried it out yet but it looks very promising, all it needs is to get a bit more popular.
