No Audio when using VNC

Hey gang,

My issue is this: I have a Linux box FC6 that has no monitor or keyboard attached. I access it thru ssh and vnc from a windows laptop.

The only purpose it serves is as a server for my music. My problem is that when I access it via VNC after reboot, the volume icon in the upper right corner of the default gnome desktop has a red x thru it. When you double click it, you get:

"no volume control gstreamer gstreamer plugins and/or devices found."

I am not logged in as root and I suspect this may be a permissions issue. By playing around with permissions in /dev things seem to improve, but any permissions changes are erased after reboot.

Or this may be a problem with alsa not starting? I'm not sure. Any ideas? Thanks

Not that this directly answers your question, but if the only thing this machine does is play your music, you should really be using one of the many front-ends designed for that rather than trying to do it through VNC. It would be much more efficient and reliable.

Front End

Thanks -- i am using slimserver to stream to remote machines. However, the server itself is hooked up to a nice set of speakers, so I like to kick off an audio player directly from the server when I am at home.
