no audio

I have installed mandrake linux 10.1 official on my pc. but i'm not getting any sound. the description of the sound card is :

Vendor: ‎Intel Corp.

Description: ‎ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller

i'm a completely new user to mandrake linux and i dont know where to find what. i would appreciate if you could give me the detail step by step process to set right this problem

well? it's your computer? is it right?

if so then try alsamixer and turn up all the important volumes (input, cd, pcm, bass, treble, master, etc)
then hit <escape> to exit

once you are back to the command prompt (as root) type
alsactl store

this will store the current mixer (volume) settings for future boots.
