Smile no accented characters on an old olivetti laptone

Hi,
I like playing with old computers.
I have mounted "Tiny Linux" distribution (based on slackware) on an old "Echos 43, Olivetti".
The kernel is 2.2.6.
I an working with the console.
I cannot have accented charaters to work, not only with an italian keyboard, but with any kind of keyboard mounted with the command: "loadkeys", or through "setup" command.
I have tried changing the fonts with no results.
I have looked trough the Keyboard HOWTOS, but nothing worked.

Can some linux guru give me some hints were to look to solve the problem?
