Redhat Linux boot problem

I am a newbie to linux and wanting to use redhat 9 I bought the complete package including manual. First time I installed I could not configure my sound, eventually my username was locked out--------------so I deleted the linux partition using partition magic 8 , reinstalled on a formatted partition and on reboot it asks for a username and password when all I gave was a root password. I cannot get past this no matter what I do. I have deleted and reinstalled numerous times but same thing-----------it asks for a username and password. Also never thinking I needed a serial number I discarded all the packaging and now i have no activation number. Please help as I cannot understand whats happening.

"no" ? is that really the most suitable and descriptive title you could have chosen?

I have no idea what an acitvation number is.. i guess it's for their automatic updates thingy.. waste of time i'd say. as for logging in. just enter the root details... should work just fine. you can also log in to a console if you want... hold down ctrl and alt and hit f1.
