NIS/graphical desktop setup problem

Hi,

I did a new install of Fedora Core 2 today on my desktop at work. The desktop machines are typically windows boxes but I just swtiched over for fun.

I first setup a normal account (jim) and everything was fine w/gnome and all graphical applications.

I then setup NIS and NFS so I could connect to the other machiens in my lab and login w/home home directory on our server.

Now, when I login at the graphical login screen on my desktop machine, the thing just hangs there and does nothing. I can switch to the terminal (ctrl-alt-f1) and login as jim and the NIS works correctly, i.e., I login to my home directory on our server. Other people in my lab can also login at the console and their settings are correct.

How do I fix this problem? I would like to just reset all of my gnome settings and start from scratch....

Jim

I can login from the console as root and run "startx" and gnome will launch.

When I login on the console as "jim" (this is NIS login to our server) and run "startx" I get this error message

"Fatal server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?"

on a side note, I'm questioning my NIS configuration because in my home directory on the main server it lists my files as owner jim , group "man" . There is no group named man and we aren't sure what that means.

thanks!!!
