Nicotine - Cannot Connect To Server

I installed Nicotine 1.0.7 via Synaptic, and everything seemed to go smoothly.

However, when I run Nicotine, the option File>Connect is greyed out.

What could cause this?

Are you sure you are not connected? It will say 'online' on the status bar if you are.

I have also noticed that there are problems connecting sometimes when using 'mail.slsk.org:2240' as the sever. Changing it to the ip address '38.115.131.131:2240' seems to clear this up.

There should be some sort of messages in the bottom window of nicotine...are you getting any errors there?

Also go and put a user id and password in the setup then apply the changes then see if it will let you connect.

I am not sure what to tell you then. Just make sure that all the settings are filled out correctly...including server connection, username, shares etc...also be sure to check out the FAQ:
http://nicotine.thegraveyard.org/cgi...aqw.py?req=all

If that does nothing then you can try the latest release snapshot (nicotine-1.0.8rc1):
http://nicotine.thegraveyard.org/#download

If still no joy then you could email the developer Hyriand. He is usually pretty good at helping out, but he is a developer so I wouldn't waste his time with poorly worded questions with incomplete details about your problem. You can find his email at the nicotine website:
http://nicotine.thegraveyard.org/

Again though...if there are any errors in the widow directly above the status bar it would be good to know them. You will probably have to scroll up.

I just started mine and it connected no problem the server used was server.slsknet.org:2240 try with that one. And make sure you uncheck the I can receive direct connections if you have a firewall running which you should have.

OK, I think I know the problem. When I logged in as root, and executed NIcotine, I connected immediately.

So I think the problem might be that I, as user, don't have permission to connect through Nicotine.

How would I go about changing this?

I've asked around about firewalls, but everyone says they are unnecssary. Can you suggest one?

Hey good to see you again rexversu. I've tried to get on IRC but I think my lousy University blocks it for some reason I'll never understand. If you can get an AIM or an ICQ account I can help you through one of those (unless they mess those up too!) Two good firewalls that I've used are firestarter and guarddog. Firestarter is much easier to set up with a wizard and it gives you a nice little monitor to make you paranoid about random connection attempts from things like XBoxes. Firestarter was giving me some problems with the monitoring program crashing (the firewall is much deeper than the application level, so it remained unaffected) so I switched to guarddog. Not quite as user friendly but it gets the job done nicely.

Hey misterflibble. I was wondering what happened to you. I've been floundering around here like a fish out of water, but I've made SOME progress.

Anyway, I think I'll try setting up an ICQ account. Sound good?
