you have to use grub or lilo there the boot loader

post a copy of menu.1st in /boot/grub folder

if you have to use the cd to boot your computer make sure you mount you hard drive

Code:
mount /dev/hda? /mnt/hda?
where ? is the / or root partition
should be something like hda1

thats the best thing i found about linux its so modular

also post a copy of /etc/fstab

I've been a windows guy for decade....

When you go to QTParted... which really sucks btw...
crappy documentation...
I don't know where Grub resides...
probably ext3... because it a certain size and yet files there is a file in there even after I cleaned it.
Grub reminds me of MS crap that makes sure you can't ditch it... and that you have to use it or have a crapload of trouble getting rid of it.

I want to get to any dos prompt and fix the original boot...

Can I get there with Knoppix???

And how do I get to "any" prompt?
Again... I'm a long time MS user "tryint" to get free...
as to now I use a mouse...

Please get me to a dos prompt?

Only f-2 gets a look at anything except error 15 grub....
and the only cd/dvd that will boot has to be linux related...
Tell me that's not being held captive?!?

I want to run recovery... and Grub won't let me...
Just like MicroSost.
Thanks,
Stocky

well qtparted is junk . Grub should of went to the MBR(master boot record)

probably ext3... because it a certain size and yet files there is a file in there even after I cleaned it.

ext3 is your format type as in fat32, NTFS and so on

I want to get to any prompt and fix the original boot...

use the keyboard [CTRL][ALT][F1] at the sametime this with bring you to a virtual console
you can use [CTRL][ALT][F1] thur [CTRL][ALT][F6]

once you get to the console
login with root (type root enter)
enter you password

use the following to find menu.1st file

Code:
nano /boot/grub/menu.1st
here is what mine looks like

Code:
timeout 10
shade 1
viewport 3 2 77 22
splashimage (hd0,0)/boot/grub/mdv-grub_splash.xpm.gz
default 0

title linux-PCLinuxOS
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 splash=silent vga=788
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img

title failsafe-PCLinuxOS
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 failsafe
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img

title Arch Linux
kernel (hd1,0)/boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hdd1 ro
initrd (hd1,0)/boot/initrd26.img
Now go find your fstab its located in /etc folder

Code:
nano /etc/fstab
write down all the info in these files
everything
then post it back

Can I get there with Knoppix???

is it livecd i've never used knoppix

Only f-2 gets a look at anything except error 15 grub....

Thumbs up Got it...

Thanks Blame and all for help.
Someone suggested I get to a command line through Knoppix, and type
SUDO TESTDISK
abd then on the 3rd or so display
select WRITE MBR... and then choose YES as to are you sure.
I have MS back and apparently grub is disabled if not gone.
And to any nubes trying to use QTparted, there's nothing "Cute" about it.
I appreciate all the effort.
Regards,
Stocky
