newest xorg-x11 crashes?

I'm just a lowly FC4 user who doesn't install except by RPM, and usually Synaptic. Yesterday I did a system update, and when I restarted, X was fried. I couldn't even boot, since FC4 uses a graphical startup. Basically it showed a screen that looked like it was mostly garbled, random memory -- although I could make out "fedora" and the Intel symbol (??).

Well, after some freaking out, I regained my composure, booted in "single" mode, did telinit 3 to get online and into the system without a GUI. It occurred to me that the X11 upgrade might have been faulty, so I figured out how to use apt-get from CLI and downgraded.

I was using the Fedora Core Linux 6.8.2-37.FC4.48.1 build, which crashed, and I'm now back on the Fedora Linux Freshrpms 6.8.2-37.FC4.45 build, which seems to work fine.

Anyway, has anyone heard of something like this happening to anyone else? For the record, I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1100, using FC4 (as the builds indicate).

Yes, I've read about the problem with the latest xorg-x11 packages for FC4 in FedoraForum and a couple other forums. No-one seems sure which chipsets the problem affects. I'm currently holding onto the original X11 files.

Hey, I'm having the same problem... how can I go back to the previous X11 configuration?
I'm using FC4, upgraded X11 using yum yesterday...
