NEWBIE: RH9, C-Media 8338 Onboard Sound

Having a problem getting my soundcard to work in Redhat 9. It detects the sound card as a C-Media 8338 (which it is) But when i try to play the sample sound, it comes out all garbled and keeps going until i either reset or turn the computer off... I tried to download drivers from C-Media's website but they are just confusing and I don't think they included everything in the tarball. I was recently using Mandrake and this soundcard worked great in Mandrake. Any suggestions on what I can do? i'm a newbie by the way

Just my 2 cents :
Disable your on-board sound chip (which obviously uses enourmous CPU cycles) and offer you for a few quids a little SoundBlaster 128 PCI which will be perfectly be seen and used ... while discharging your CPU of such software-emulated sound tasks.

The other day i went and picked up a $20 Sound Blaster from Best Buy. Went into BIOS, disabled my onboard sound device, tried insalling windows just to make sure all works fine.... it detected the sound blaster, didnt find the onboard sound which is great... the card works fine. I remove all the partitions, install linux on a clean hard drive (redhat9) and it is still seeing my C-Media device.... somehow.

I think i'm just going to take a hammer to this motherboard and go get a different one. it's a POS anyways.
