newbie question on distro problems

I like mepis but am having endless problems connecting to the internet (broadband). Other distro's work okay with the internet (Kanotix/Ubuntu)
but they have their own issues. Is it possible to take a distro and insert working parts from other distro to make linux work okay on my setup...

Thanks

You can--in principle--take any bit of software from one machine (distro, etc.) and install it on another. This is not , however, going to be an efficient way to solve your problems.

What is the issue with Mepis? What happens when you connect? Error messages?

Details-----we need DETAILS!!!

Thanks for the response. No error messages from mepis, it just will not connect to interner. It did once upon a time and took longer and longer to connect each time. Now either it will not connect or it takes many attempts at rebooting.

Do you have a router?
What happens when you try to connect?---can you ping a domain name? A raw IP address?
Is your connection static IP or DHCP?
What configuration have you done?

Please post the output of ifconfig...

Somewhere in the /var/log directory, on most systems, you may find log-files that will help you to understand just what it's doing.

Thank you both for the advice.

Do you mean /sbin/ifconfig files.........

Can you get to your router configuration page? (Typically using a browser)

if you typed ifconfig and got that printout without anything about eth0 or similar, then it seems that computer is not talking to the router--or that it is not seeing the ethernet adapter

Can you watch when system is booting up to see if it is detecting your ethernet card? (or check the logs)

Will check next time it happens. Got so fed up with the problem that I did a re-install and mepis connected. Assume the problem will arise again.........
