Newbie needs help installing Wine under Mandrake 8.2

Hey, this is my first time posting here and I'm a complete newbie to Linux, just migrating over from M$, but there are features on windows that I need and rebooting is becoming a drag.
I'm trying to install Wine-20040309 onto Mandrake 8.2. I couldn't get the .rpm that came with the CDs working, so I have decided to get the source code.
I've decompressed the Wine-20040309.tar.gz and it created the folder /home/caled/wine-20040309 with all the files etc within. This is where i stumble... I've followed the instructions on winehq.com to then run ./tools/wineinstall and it gives me the error message;
"WINE Installer c0.74

You're running this from the wrong directory.Change to the Wine source's main directory and try again"

I've tried moving the wineinstall file into /home/caled/wine-20040309/ and ran but the same error message occured.
I've also tried unpacking into the /usr/local/src directory and then run wineinstall from there, but again the same error.
It's driving me bonkers, and I've been trying to figure it out for ages now.

Keep in mind, I'm a complete newbie, so step by step answers would be great (if not a little time consuming, so thank you in advance).

not again...

Ok, thanks for that post. Guess I forgot about that part of the documentation. Lot to take in, innit?

I've just run into another problem, though;

[Caled@localhost wine-20040309]$ tools/wineinstall
WINE Installer v0.74

Running Configure...

Configure:creating cache config.cache
checking build system type...i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type...i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking whether make sets $[MAKE]...yes
checking for gcc...gcc
checking for C compiler default output filename...configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See 'config.log' for more details.

Configure failed, aborting install
[Caled@localhost wine-20040309]$

Ok, I can figure somethings gone wrong with the compiler (it's the small victories, ya see). But I haven't a clue what or how to fix it.
Again, any and all advice appreciated.
Cheers
Caled

Easier way. Don't use it unless there are no Linux programs equivilent to what you're trying to run. That's not often, and this is great advice.

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.
It was created by Wine configure 20040309, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was

Ok, thats the main part of the config.log, didnt want to put it all down as I thought it was long and it looked unnecessary. Any ideas whats up?

Seeing that you're using Mandrake 8.2, you'll probably have to upgrade the compiler to a newer version in order to get it working.
