newbie in need of help setting up a samba server
hi all, before i ask my question i just want to point out im quite new to linux (about 2 months) and ive been running ubuntu on my laptop.
right what i want to do is setup a pc which i can stick under the stairs with my router to stream all my music and videos from.
also i want to make a couple of scripts so that when i put a dvd in the drive it will automaticly rip it to an AVI file with the correct film name and share it, also the same with audio cd's (make a folder with the correct name and make the mp3's there)
now the questions,
which disto would you suggest i use? (i have used debian and ubuntu a little)
how difficalt would it be to create the scripts?
what software would i need to install? (xdvdsrink, perl, ect)
like i said im a newbie so as much info as possable please
cheers...

AGNULA Linux is a LIVE-CD based distro. You may try that out.

Check out mythtv at mythtv.org. It is a Tivo like replacement program that runs on linux. It has features to rip and share DVD movies and music CD's. I think it would work great for you and if you want in the future you could add a TV tuner card to record your favorite shows.
