Newbie here, Linux Ubuntu V 5:10. GRUB error 18

hey there, i am a bit of a newbie to linux, i have Ubuntu (breezy Badger) V5.10, it all installs properly, and tells me to reboot the computer, i do so,

"Checking DMI Data...etc...

GRUB Loading

Error 18"

this is all it gives me as an error message. any advice or explanation would be very much appreciated.

Which is a strange error to get. No clue on how to fix it. Can you boot from GRUB on a floppy?
