Newbie here: configuring programs?

I have 3 linux manuals(books) in front of me and I can't figure out how to do a simple task like configuring programs.

For example: I am trying to configure Samba and Swat isn't working

What is the command to view the smb.conf file?

I know it's location, but don't know how to get into it.

Secondly, I used chkconfig for swat and found out it was turned off. How do I turn it on?

In the command line?

vi /path/to/file
press i for Insert mode so you can edit the file.
esc to exit i mode
shift-q q to quit
shift q wq to write and quit
shift q w to write

To access the samba.comf I would type:

vi /etc/smb.comf

??
