I just installed RH 7.0 and for some reason I cannot access my cable modem, floppy drive, and cdrom. there arent even any icons on my desktop for them.

yes, you don;t alwas get wizzy little icons (though red hat should have given you them when you started kde).

the cable modem is something i know little about (living in ol' blightly we don;t really have much broadband).

you can use a file manager (konqueror or nautilus or midnight comander etc.) to browse to the /mnt/ directory to look at your floppy and cdrom. you might need to mount them first in a terminal program (you can also open konqueror by typing it in the terminal program if you're in gnome and can;t find it in the menu).

there should be a set up thing for kde to set icons for you

carlcromer - I have install RH-7.0 "Several" times I hasen to say. If you do the standard "WorkStation" Installation, you will be prompted to sypply a bit of information regarding your Internet (NIC) / IPS connection:

1) - Host Name - Your ISP should have given you this but if not, look in your network setting on Win-9x, NT and you'll find it there.
2) - Netmask - Mine is 255.255.255.0
3) - IP-Add. - xx.xxx.xx.xxx
4) - Gateway - xx.xxx.xx.x
5) - DNS Servers(1) - xx.x.xx.xx
DNS (2) - xx.x.xx.xx

I had to get all this information from the Service providor..

As for the Desktop problem, if you install Gnome & KDE, I've found a few problems with that configuration. Sometimes (IF KDE is installed w/Gnome, my linuxconf will not work, among other things (like desktop icons). I found it best to install one or the other. If you install KDE alone, make sure you install net_config and linuxconf, mine didn't always do it and I hade to re-install them.

Are you installing it form a CD, source src, or RPM's..?? in any case I'd check the source of whatever you installed it from to make sure it's not currupt.

Yes I did get that screen in the setup process and did not have the info at the time and thought that I could go back into to it at a later time. I'm sure this can be done just not sure how.

Logged in as root, you can change the network information with /sbin/netconf

Also, how are you trying to access your cd-rom, floppy, and cable modem? Which programs or processes and what error messages, if any, do you get?

Yeah I figured it would be something like that. The thing with my cd-rom and floppy I have a little more info. I set KDE as my default, but at the logon screen it enables you to choose between kde, gnome, default, or failsafe. After I had logged on under kde and I exited and choose gnome. It put all the icons for both the kde and gnome on the desk top. I took two of them and deleted them but now none come back. I think that this my be my problem.

Wow, that's a strange one. I pop back and forth between both Gnome and KDE and haven't experienced that one.

Can you create a new icon/shortcut on either desktop?

I went back and started using gnome and the icons for the a: drive and cdrom are there. How would I change my default to gnome. This may be the best solution.

I know that when I log in using kde, the next time I log in it will default to kde.

If I log in to gnome, the next time I log in it will default to gnome.

But that's just my experience. I'm sure that there's a way to set it up to only use one or the other, but I like to use both (no need to stagnate).
